Models for measuring the impact of human activities on biodiversity

The idea is born

The PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) financed the creation of a national scientific research center of excellence dedicated to biodiversity in 2022, the National Biodiversity Future Center visit the site.

The center is coordinated by the CNR (National Research Council) and brings together the excellence of Italian scientific research, with the aim of supporting operational interventions aimed at monitoring, preserving and restoring biodiversity in marine, terrestrial and urban ecosystems as well as enhancing biodiversity and make it a central element on which to base sustainable development.

The Management Institute of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa is involved in Spoke 7 – Biodiversity and society, and in particular in Task 7.5.6 dedicated to the impact of human activities on biodiversity, with the aim of defining application models for companies useful for measuring the impact of their activities on biodiversity, under the responsibility of Prof Lino Cinquini.

The creation of public-proven partnerships, expressed in co-design paths of academic models in collaboration with stakeholders, is a distinctive feature of the NBFC: this is where the first contact with the Capellino Foundation was born.

The project is consolidated

The happy meeting between the Sant'Anna team and the Capellino Foundation develops over time, starting from mid-2022, with interesting results both from an academic and corporate life point of view.

Foundation Capellino participates directly in the creation of the model for analyzing the impacts on biodiversity by companies along the entire value chain (upstream and downstream) and, through Almo Nature, in its subsequent experimentation.

The main stages of model development are:

  • First year (2023): definition of the model by the Sant'Anna team (coordinated by Prof Lino Cinquini) with the Capellino Foundation;
  • Second year (2024): first testing of the model on Almo Nature and subsequently on some other companies that in the meantime have expressed interest in participating in the process (in particular Alce Nero and AltroMercato);
  • Third year (2025): diffusion of the model, through seminars, events, scientific articles.
