Casentinesi Forest National Park

The Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park is a national park established in 1993, located in the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines, along the border of the Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany regions, between the provinces of Forlì-Cesena, Arezzo and Florence.

Since 23 September 1985 the R.N.I. of Sasso Fratino is awarded the Diploma of Protected Areas of the Council of Europe (Resolution (85) 12 of 23.9.85), while on 7 July 2017, in Krakow, the UNESCO Commission included the integral nature reserve of Sasso Fratino and the old beech forests within the perimeter of the park, in the World Heritage Site within the Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe serial site.

In April 2021 the Park was included in the IUCN Green List.

 

The Project: “The Guard Dog”

 

The “Guardian Dog in the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park” project was born in 2017 from the need to mitigate conflict with livestock activities, giving a concrete contribution to breeders in the choice and use of suitable prevention tools.

The protection dog represents one of the most effective methods for reducing damage from predation and has always been a constant practice in situations where breeding coexists with large predators. The Foundation Capellino has contributed to the project since its inception by providing Almo Nature kibble to the 29 guardian dogs involved, guaranteeing them a healthy and balanced diet.

The results were excellent as in 4 years the predation of wolves on the flocks was eliminated.

The National Park of the Casentino Forests, Monte Falterona, Campigna, covers an area of about 36,000 ha, equally divided between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, including the provinces of Forlì-Cesena, Arezzo, and Florence. It extends along the Tuscan-Romagna Apennine ridge, descending steeply along the parallel valleys of the Romagna side and more gradually in the Tuscan side, which presents itself with softer slopes, up to the wide valley bottom formed by the Arno. The Romagna side includes the territories of the municipalities of Bagno di Romagna, Santa Sofia, Premilcuore, Portico-San Benedetto and Tredozio. On the Tuscan side are the Casentino municipalities of Poppi, Bibbiena, Chiusi della Verna, Pratovecchio Stia and, finally, those of the Mugello villages of San Godenzo and Londa.
