EU Biodiversity Corridors - Project Emys

Emys Project

The Emys Project, supported by Fondazione Capellino, was launched to contribute to the conservation of Emys orbicularis, the European pond turtle, currently in serious decline due to habitat loss and the presence of non-native species.

Partnership

Objective

The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is one of the most charismatic endemic species of European wetlands. Unfortunately, habitat loss and the introduction of alien species have placed the species under severe pressure. In Italy, it has recently been classified as Endangered (EN) on the Red List of Italian Vertebrates.

Thanks to a project funded by Fondazione Capellino, tangible measures are being undertaken to conserve of the natural populations in Piedmont, where the species faces serious challenges.

The project includes a range of activities, such as the breeding and management of specimens, monitoring of spawning, incubation of eggs, housing of hatchlings in the laboratory, and the rearing of juveniles in an external nursery. These efforts lead to the release of the turtles into the wild, followed by ongoing monitoring to ensure their survival.

Project

The project’s conservation actions are implemented in synergy with other protection programmes led by the Emys Piemonte Centre and the Management Authority of the Protected Areas of the Piedmont Po, with the following objectives:

  • Re-establish a colony of European pond turtles in an area from which the species has disappeared;

  • Strengthen an existing population that currently shows clear signs of vulnerability;

  • Convert an area currently used for agriculture into a permanent wetland (land acquisition funded by the Park Authority, environmental restoration funded by the Life URCA project) within the SAC “Paludi di San Genuario e San Silvestro”;

  • Improve habitat in the “Sponde fluviali di Palazzolo Vercellese” area by preparing terrestrial zones as nesting sites.

Progetto - Project Emys_1

The project follows a series of steps leading to the release of numerous European pond turtles into the wild. These include breeding and management of adult breeders, monitoring of egg-laying, incubation of eggs, housing of hatchlings in the laboratory, rearing and management of juveniles in the outdoor nursery, release into the wild, and ongoing monitoring of the released animals.

At the Palazzolo Vercellese site, a period of 3 to 4 years of releases is planned, totalling approximately 105–110 individuals. An additional 30–40 individuals will be released in the S. Genuario area over one or two years, depending on turtle availability.

Area of intervention

The two reference areas for the restocking operations lie within the SAC “Paludi di San Genuario e San Silvestro” and within the boundaries of the Piedmont Po Regional Park, in the biotope “Sponde fluviali di Palazzolo Vercellese.” In both locations, habitat improvement measures will be implemented.

Project updates

The main developments of the Emys project, from January 2024 to today. Use the arrows or the bar below to navigate.

Jan – Mar 2026

Winter management, Trachemys monitoring and first eggs

In January, work focuses on outdoor tanks, ice conditions, and indoor aquariums, feeding and laboratory cleaning. In March, monitoring of Trachemys scripta begins in Palazzolo Vercellese and San Genuario. Non native individuals are removed and three Emys released in 2024/25 are recaptured, all in excellent condition. In parallel, a dry nesting area is completed and the first early eggs are placed into incubation.

Post-release monitoring and second-year balance

Before brumation, checks continue in Palazzolo: on 10th October, 12 individuals are observed basking, followed by another 4 on 5th November. The annual balance confirms an active population, more than 80 individuals released into the wild, around 80 new pond turtles in laboratory rearing facilities and approximately 60 juveniles growing for future release.

Juvenile adaptation, final release and 2025 hatchings

Acclimatisation in the outdoor tank continues successfully, with growth supported through daily feeding and the water management using filtration, a UVC lamp, and regular top ups. On 8th August, the final 11 pond turtles of the year were released, bringing total releases to 81 individuals. The hatching season ends with 79 hatchlings from 83 viable eggs, approximately 95% success rate.

Outdoor restart and new releases in Palazzolo

Between April and May, outdoor structures are reactivated. Tanks are emptied, animals are checked, systems are restored and feeding is resumed. During surveys in Palazzolo, several pond turtles are observed basking, indicating successful acclimatisation of individuals released in 2024. On 20th June, another 30 Emys were released, bringing the provisional total to 70 individuals.

New pond for breeders and health preparation

In February, a new pond was built for the breeders, with waterproofing layers, soil backfill, geotextile matting, and planting of native aquatic species. With the first mild days of March, controlled awakening of juveniles kept outdoors begins. These animals are prepared for release during the year, alongside preventive treatments, swabs, and blood sampling.

Habitat restoration and 2024 season balance

Between October and November, environmental improvement work is expanded in Palazzolo Vercellese, San Genuario and Ghiaia Grande, identifying interventions for nesting, thermoregulation, and ecological connectivity. In December, attention returns to indoor rearing facilities. The 2024 balance includes 11 nests, 92 eggs, 69 hatchlings, and 37 juveniles from 2023 surviving their first year.

First release in Palazzolo Vercellese and new 2024 cohort

On 21st August, 40 juvenile Emys orbicularis were released in the ZSC Sponde Fluviali di Palazzolo Vercellese, in an area where the species had not been recorded since 1984. Health checks confirm the absence of Salmonella, Herpesvirus, and Mycobacteria. Between August and September, nests from the season begin to hatch and newly hatched turtles form the basis for future reinforcement actions.

Apr – Jun 2024

First nesting and outdoor transfer of juveniles

Despite a cool, wet year, several nests and dozens of eggs are recorded by June and placed into incubation. Juveniles born in 2023 are transferred from indoor breeding tanks to an outdoor tank with native vegetation, submerged branches and basking areas, entering a semi natural acclimatisation phase.

Apr – Jun 2024

Reactivation of outdoor structures and pre-release screening

As the animals awaken, maintenance and checks intensify including water filtration and recirculation systems, vegetation management, water changes and the refitting of a tank for a third breeding cohort. In May, 23 fyke nets were deployed in San Genuario and new breeding individuals were captured. Genetic results also require further sampling, and pre-release health screening begins.

Operational start of the collaboration

With the 2024 agreement, the Foundation support for Centro Emys Piemonte takes shape, covering breeding, restocking, and monitoring of the European pond turtle in the Parco del Po Piemontese. In the first months, work focuses on the daily management of the 2023 juveniles, including feeding, cleaning, health checks, and measurements. In March, the first signs of seasonal activity appear in the outdoor tanks and educational activities resume.
