Na een korte periode aan de Universiteit van Tokyo, vervolgde hij zijn studies in de Verenigde Staten aan de Wesleyan University, om vervolgens een doctoraat in filosofie te behalen aan de Humboldt Universiteit van Berlijn. Hij is momenteel universitair hoofddocent aan de Universiteit van Tokyo en bekend om zijn ecologische herlezing van het denken van Karl Marx. Zijn boek Het Kapitaal in het Antropoceen (2020) verkocht meer dan 500.000 exemplaren in Japan en droeg bij aan de hernieuwde interesse in het marxisme in de context van de klimaatcrisis. Saito ontving de Deutscher Memorial Prize in 2018 en de JSPS Prize in 2020 voor zijn bijdrage aan het marxistische onderzoek.*   *Het Kapitaal in het Antropoceen* s een economisch-politiek essay dat de mondiale ecologische crisis aanpakt door middel van een radicale herlezing van Karl Marx, waarbij een alternatief voor het kapitalisme wordt voorgesteld om het Antropoceen aan te pakken - het geologische tijdperk gekenmerkt door de destructieve impact van de mens op de aarde. Fondazione Capellino is onder andere geïnteresseerd in Saitō Kōhei vanwege de raakpunten in de analyse die beiden maken over de oorzaken van de mogelijke/waarschijnlijke achteruitgang van de menselijke soort en de biodiversiteit waarmee wij verbonden zijn op aarde. Aan de oorsprong van de mogelijke/waarschijnlijke achteruitgang van de menselijke soort ligt de onhoudbaarheid van onbeperkte economische groei, maar ook van de als duurzaam gedefinieerde economie omdat deze, zoals bewezen, op zijn beurt snel transformeert in een hefboom die de negatieve impact zelf vergroot. Wat betreft de praktische oplossingen zijn we wel verschillend, omdat Saitō Kōhei een ecologisch en democratisch communisme identificeert, gebaseerd op Degrowth als mogelijke uitweg, terwijl de Fondazione Capellino concreet de Reintegration Economy voorstelt en praktiseert, dat wil zeggen het behoud van de markt maar met het gebruik van bedrijfsdividenden, allemaal en zolang als nodig, om de biodiversiteit te herstellen die de economie consumeert. Een vorm van economische groei die niet alleen extraheert maar reïntegreert wat het extraheert: dividenden om Natuurkapitaal te creëren dat van iedereen en van het leven is: juist niet om exclusieve financiële rijkdom te creëren voor een kleine groep. De Fondazione Capellino en het bedrijf Almo Nature dat zij bezit, praktiseren *All Profits to the Planet*, dat wil zeggen de Reintegration Economy.
