A special day to renew the bond between people and dogs

A special day to renew the bond between people and...

Today is International Dog Day, but your lifelong companion has no idea.

And, if we're honest, they couldn't care less.

It's a funny thought. In a world where so much is measured by what we own, the greatest gift a dog asks of us, today and every day, is simply our time, our full attention, and our presence, undistracted by a screen.

If we told the story of a dog's life through photographs, there would be no treasured possessions taking centre stage. Instead, there would be us together in the park, in the kitchen, or curled up on the sofa on a Sunday morning.

For dogs, time spent together is how love is measured.

And within that quiet exchange lies something remarkable. We often believe we rescued them, from a shelter, from the streets, from hunger or loneliness. Yet, more often than we realise, they rescue us too, without ever asking for recognition.

They get us outdoors when we'd rather stay on the sofa. They reward us with fresh air, sunshine and the chance to stop for a chat with someone we meet along the way. Whilst they pause every few steps to sniff scents that tell them stories we cannot detect, they encourage us to slow down, notice our surroundings and appreciate the small things, from birdsong to the smell of grass after the rain.

At a time when life so often pulls our attention in every direction, dogs have a remarkable way of bringing us back to the present. They are not worrying about tomorrow's deadline, next month's holiday or what is for dinner. They are completely absorbed in the scent they are exploring or the path beneath their paws. Their ability to live in the moment reminds us that sometimes it is enough simply to be present, together.

If they save us from ourselves in countless quiet ways every day, perhaps we owe them more than a full bowl and a hurried walk before dinner.

When a dog stops to sniff a bush, it may seem like a delay to us. But for them, it is one of the ways they understand the world, find their bearings and simply enjoy being a dog, rather than always being expected to keep up with us. Giving them that extra minute, letting them off the lead where it is safe to do so, and respecting what they genuinely need are small acts of kindness. Together, they honour the promise of love that dogs made to us long ago, as told in The Promise, the short film directed by Academy Award winner Gabriele Salvatores.

This is what gives the relationship between people and dogs its true meaning. The more we respect their nature, the more we return a little of the unconditional companionship they give us every single day.

International Dog Day is not about buying another gift. It is an opportunity to pause, look at the companion by our side and ask ourselves whether we are honouring our part of that lifelong bond. Of all the species they could have walked beside, dogs chose us. The least we can do is make sure we are keeping our side of the promise.
