Why dogs love sniffing so much

You put your shoes on, grab the leash, and head outside expecting a simple walk around the block. Meanwhile, your dog stops every few steps to sniff a tree, a patch of grass, or a random spot on the sidewalk that seems completely unimportant to you.

And you’ve probably asked yourself multiples times:

“What could possibly be so interesting?”

The answer is simple: to dogs, smell is information.

While humans mainly experience the world through sight, dogs rely heavily on scent. In fact, dogs can have up to 300 million scent receptors in their noses, compared to only around 5 million in humans.

Their brains are also specially designed to process smells in far more detail than ours. That’s why what seems ordinary to us can be incredibly interesting to them.

Another dog may have walked by earlier that morning. A squirrel may have crossed nearby. A new scent may have appeared after the rain. Dogs may even pick up on certain stress-related or emotional signals through scent. Even if you walk the exact same route every day, your dog experiences something different each time because the scent environment constantly changes.

Sniffing is one of the main ways dogs explore and understand the world around them. For them, sniffing is not a distraction from the walk. In many ways, it is the walk.

This is also why it’s important to let dogs sniff during walks whenever possible.

Many human companions focus mainly on physical exercise, but walks are also mentally stimulating for dogs. Sniffing allows them to explore naturally, stay curious, and engage with their environment in a meaningful way. It makes walks more satisfying for them.

Of course, safety still matters, especially in busy areas. But constantly rushing dogs from one place to another can take away one of the most enriching parts of the walk for them.

So the next time your dog stops to sniff a random patch of grass, maybe let them have that moment.

To us, it may seem insignificant.

But to them, it’s an entire world of information!
