Complete vs complementary cat food: what’s the difference?

You may have already noticed this label on some cat foods: “complementary food.”

And like many people, you may have wondered: “Does this mean this food isn’t really good for my cat? Should I still be feeding it?”

Today, the word “complete” is often associated with something better, more balanced, or more nutritious in people’s minds. Some may even assume that a product is somehow “less good” simply because it is labeled as complementary.

But the reality is quite different! Here’s what it really means.

What does “complementary food” actually mean?

Complete foods are formulated to meet all of a cat’s nutritional needs at every meal. To achieve this, vitamins and minerals are added to the recipe so the food is nutritionally balanced on its own.

Complementary foods work differently.

They do not contain these added supplements, but instead focus on ingredients that, on their own in a single meal, do not provide every essential nutrient a cat needs.

In reality, it’s very similar to how we approach our own diets.

Why does this often worry human companions?

The word “complementary” can easily be misunderstood.
People sometimes assume it means the food is somehow “less complete,” less serious, or less suitable for their cat’s needs.

In reality, complementary feeding simply follows an approach where nutritional balance is built through the cat’s overall diet, rather than through a single meal alone.

It’s actually very similar to the way we eat ourselves: when we have a plate of pasta, a salad, or fish, we don’t worry about whether that single meal instantly covers all of our nutritional needs. We understand that variety and balance over time are what help meet those needs.

And that is exactly the logic behind complementary food for cats.

An approach focused on variety and ingredient quality

Today, many pet parents are looking for a more varied, simpler, and less processed diet for their cats.

Some complementary foods follow this philosophy by focusing on high quality ingredients and simple recipes.

At Almo Nature, our complementary HQS recipes (Mousse HQS, Natural HQS and Hydration Help HQS) are designed with this approach in mind, placing great importance on the quality of the ingredients themselves.

The goal is to highlight the quality and simplicity of the ingredients used in each recipe.

So how can you offer your cat a balanced diet?

The key is simple: vary protein sources and combine complementary foods with complete foods (Complete HQS, La Cucina HQS, Supportive Formulas HQS, Classic Complete).

The goal is not to oppose “complete” and “complementary” nutrition.

The two can absolutely coexist in a cat’s diet. Together, they can help provide balanced nutrition while also maximizing hydration, flavor, and enjoyment at mealtime :)

What to remember

At the end of the day, “complementary” does not mean “less good.”

It simply means that a cat’s nutritional balance is built through their overall diet… not from a single bowl alone.

What matters most is the quality of the ingredients, variety, and an overall feeding approach designed to support your companion’s needs. 💚
